Repository-Based Interface to External Programs

The USoft ODBC Server offers a unique interface to external programs and desktop tools that support the Microsoft standard ODBC programming language interface, such as MS-Excel, MS-Word, MS-Access and Lotus Approach. It is the first ODBC driver that guarantees execution of all the business and integrity rules at all times. Those rules are stored and managed within the USoft Developer repository. USoft Developer manages the data manipulation in client/server databases, such as Sybase, Oracle, or Informix.

USoft ODBC Server Enables Desktop & Server Application Integration

The power of the USoft ODBC Server is that it ensures that data manipulation routines pass through the USoft server/client repository-based rule server. By doing so, all the business and integrity rules stored in the server/client repository are enforced against those routines. Thus, there is no risk of compromising the integrity (rules) of the database. An example of an installed environment where USoft ODBC can add immediate value is one where PowerBuilder clients are accessing data from back-end database servers. Through the implementation of USoft ODBC in this environment, these PowerBuilder clients can leverage the capabilities of the USoft ODBC Server to ensure data integrity across the database server environments that those PowerBuilder clients are accessing.

Integration with Microsoft Desktops

The new Microsoft desktop tools include Microsoft Query which is a self-contained, ODBC-supported data access application. Microsoft Query can be used from within Microsoft Excel, for example, to bring data from remote database files and tables into your worksheet for analysis, reporting, and charting. The power of the USoft ODBC Server is that data manipulation passes through the USoft Developer repository-based rule server. It supports all business and integrity rules stored in the repository for connected desktop tools. There is no risk of compromising the integrity (rules) of the database.

Interactive External Application Interface

ODBC is the most widely supported data access API that standardizes the SQL call-level interface across all supported databases. By means of this interface you can connect your application to the interactive USoft Developer rule server, but also to other ODBC drivers that the major database vendors supply. The benefit of the USoft ODBC Server is that you do not have to re-program all rules. This saves time, money and guarantees quality, because you only have to define and manage them at one location. The ODBC interface defines the following:

A library of ODBC function calls that allow an application to connect to USoft's repository-based rule server to execute SQL statements, and retrieve results.
SQL syntax based on the X/Open and SQL/Access Group SQL CAE specification (1992). To send a SQL statement, you include the statement as an argument in an ODBC function call. You need not customize the statement for a specific RDBMS.
A standard set of error codes.
A standard representation for data types.
